Our Team Helps Other Surgeons Getting Started with New Techniques

On April 16, 2012, Dr. Ferrández was invited to Hospital San José in Vitoria, Spain, to perform an XLIF surgery in collaboration with colleagues from that institution. The patient was a young male who underwent fusion surgery of two upper lumbar discs. He was discharged 18 hours post-procedure with a single 4 cm incision on his left flank.

Dr. Ferrández was invited to deliver a conference and surgical demonstration on XLIF in Zaragoza. A group of Spanish surgeons convened at the «Miguel Servet» University Hospital for an introductory experience with this technique. An elderly patient underwent surgery for degenerative lumbar scoliosis, which was successfully corrected using this minimally invasive approach.

Dr. Ferrandez, our esteemed spine specialist, conducted two demonstration surgeries to highlight the significant corrective potential of XLIF, a contemporary minimally invasive procedure. XLIF minimizes disruption to healthy tissues while addressing severe lumbar deformities in elderly patients. This advanced technique broadens the eligibility criteria for corrective surgery among patients with spinal degenerative deformities across a wider age spectrum.

The accompanying radiographic images illustrate the post-operative straightening of the patients’ lumbar spines, achieved through the implantation of four bone wedges (or specify the type: e.g., «four titanium bone wedges,» «four PEEK bone wedges») into the intervertebral spaces within the affected curvature.
